Streaming at Scale was Sky’s inaugural Tech Summit, a one-day event that took place on September 7, 2016, at Sky HQ. The event included an exhibition of recent Sky innovations, and tours of Sky Studios. It attracted leading technology providers, infrastructure specialists and content partners.
Sky also played host to the Streaming Video Alliance (SVA) whose members held their first quarterly meeting outside the US. The Tech Summit began with a keynote from Stephen van Rooyen, Sky’s UK and Ireland CEO. Stephen explained how Sky is continuing to lead in TV innovation, where streaming fits within Sky’s strategy, and where streaming fits within Sky’s vision for the future of TV.
Attendees heard from a broad range of speakers drawn from Sky and across the technology industry – companies represented included Akamai, Elemental, Cisco, Roku, Facebook, iflix, VICE Media, Decipher and CCS Insight.
A key theme was delivering broadcast quality video at broadcast scale, enabling immersive new experiences. This was explored in a masterclass led by Gidon Katz, Managing Director of NOW TV, and Patrick Miceli, Director of Engineering at Sky. Another theme was the impact of streaming on content production and content consumption, explored by Gary Davey, Managing Director, Content at Sky. Alun Webber, Sky’s Chief Product Officer, explained how Sky was delivering personalised recommendations, while Jamie West, Deputy Managing Director of Sky Media, spoke on personalised advertising opportunities. Wendy Scott, Director of Mobile Products at Sky, explained Sky’s approach to designing a great customer experience.
Emma Lloyd, Director of Corporate Development, Partnerships and Investments at Sky, chaired a panel exploring the evolving ecosystem in streaming media. Chris Johns, Chief Engineer at Sky, chaired a panel looking at different approaches to innovation. In his closing remarks Didier Lebrat, Group Chief Technology Officer, said Sky offered “a unique working environment, where fantastic content and innovative technology combine to give our customers a market-leading experience”.
The event was the initiative of Colin McQuade, Managing Director, Group TV and Digital Platforms at Sky. “I’m thrilled that we hosted this Tech Summit at Sky. The fact that we opened our doors for the first time, so that others could learn from our experiences and hear about all about our amazing achievements in streaming, simply reaffirmed our leadership in the market,” said Colin.
